Betty A. Shirley, age 81, of Valley, Ala., passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 5, 2020. She was surrounded by her family at her residence in Valley. 

Ms. Shirley was born in Welch, Ala., on July 25, 1938 to the late Robert Richard Lyons and Jewell Chase Lyons. 

Ms. Shirley is survived by her children, Chris (Wanda) Oliver of Valley, Cathy (Russell) Henry of Fredonia, Ala.; and grandchildren Raven (Watson) Nichols of Lawrenceville, Ga., Cassie (Jeremy) Gordon of Lanett, Ala., Randalyn Henry of Auburn, Ala.; great-grandchildren Sailor Nichols, Jack Nichols and Jacob Gordon; and step-children Tyre (Sandra) Turner, Carol (Rusty) Ross, Jack (Allyson) Shirley, Sean (Crystal) Shirley, and numerous step-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Sue (Ray) Watson, Valley, Ala.

Ms. Shirley was a retired dental hygienist, and she was a former employee of West Point Stephens, where she was the supervisor of the cloth room at Langdale Mill and Shawmut Mill.  She was also employed at Hood’s Pharmacy after her retirement, where she met and made many friends.  Ms. Shirley was an active member of the Lanett United Methodist Church, The Huguley Lions Club, and the Active Life Senior Center in West Point, Ga. She enjoyed playing card games with her friends and traveling at every opportunity. Ms. Shirley’s greatest joy in life was her family. She loved her children and grandchildren, and she spent time with them at every possible opportunity. She enjoyed taking care of others, and she will be remembered as a good friend, an excellent cook, and a loving and funny mother and grandmother.
