Mrs. Helen Benefield Pitts, age 84, of Valley, Alabama passed away on Monday, March 6, 2017 at her residence.
Mrs. Pitts was born in Randolph County, Alabama on February 15, 1933 to the late Thomas Hansel Benefield and Lueola Wilson Benefield.
She was preceded in death by her sons, Melvin Crew Pitts, Jr. and Timothy Stephen Pitts; brother, Rufus Thomas (Shelby) Benefield; brother-in-law, Donnie Milam.
She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Melvin Crew Pitts, Sr., Valley; son, Byron Lee (Delores) Pitts; brothers, Russell Marlin (Sherry) Benefield, Hansel Wade (Hoap) Benefield; sisters, Barbara Amelia Benefield Milam, Gwendolyn Benefield, Angela Yvonne Benefield (Jimmy) Ballard; daughters-in-law, Susan Lipham Pitts, Diane Black Pitts; grandchildren, Michael Ryan Pitts, Carol Kaye Pitts, Tiffany Pitts Cudmore, Tessa Pitts Childs; several great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Pitts attended Lanett High School. She received her GED in 1990 from Southern Union Community College and was crowned Miss Senior Valley in 1995.
Mrs. Pitts was a member of the Midway Baptist Church in Valley for 50 years and served as a long-time pianist and Sunday school teacher.
She retired from the Lanier Carter Mill in 1976. She was a member of the Red Hatters and was a very creative lady in several arts and crafts.
She was an avid traveler with an outgoing personality that rarely met a stranger. She was a league bowler for many years and recipient of several trophies.
