Alpha A. Piland, 94, of Tallahassee, peacefully passed into the loving arms of Jesus on Tuesday, October 22, 2019, while surrounded by her loving family. Born in Pelham, Georgia on October 14, 1925, she was a daughter of the late William W. and Ophelia Boutwell Adams.
She is also preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Gene W. “Buster” Piland, Sr.; great-grandson, Austin Fleetwood; and siblings, Sarah J. Capps, Leroy Adams and Harry Adams.
A 1943 graduate of Pelham High School, she attended Troy University for a while, then moved to Atlanta, Georgia and in 1945, while living in Atlanta, married her high school sweetheart, Gene W. “Buster” Piland, Sr. Following their move to Tallahassee, she worked for and retired from the State of Florida, Office of the Governor. She was a member of Temple Baptist Church (now North Florida Baptist Church), loved art and painting and was the President of Women in Construction from 1970 -1971. She also enjoyed traveling, water aerobics, spending time with family, but most of all, loved her family.
Survivors include her four children, Walter (Paula) Piland, Pamela (Jack) McKinnon, Mark A. Piland and Lane (Stacey) Piland; nine grandchildren, Pam Barksdale, Tammy Fleetwood, Trey Piland, Michele (Kelly) Kitchens, Mac (Tarah) McKinnon, Amy (Daniel) Cook, Shelby Piland, Colby Piland and Brandon Leggett; ten great-grandchildren, Jenna Hurst, Lauren (Michael) Shields, Amanda Piland, Johnny Piland, Branden Piland, Dawson Kitchens, Kamdyn Kitchens, Milee Harper Kitchens, Rylan McKinnon and Breckon McKinnon; four great-great-grandchildren, Natalie Hurst, Makenna Hurst, Brayden Shields and Hadley Shields; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
