He attended J.S. Waters Elementary School and Chatham Central High School. In his younger years he enjoyed fishing and playing basketball. He was employed at Parkdale Textile Mill in Sanford, N.C. until they closed.
William leaves to cherish his memories: his father, Fred Cotten and his mother, Josephine Cotten of the home; two sisters, Gwendolyn Thompson (Ben) of Sanford, N.C. and Pandora Paschal (Jerry) of Goldston, N.C.; two brothers, Gerald Cotten (Peggy) of Cameron, N.C. and Darren Cotten of Palmyra, PA; five nieces, Brittany Cotten, Jasmine Thompson, Tiffany Cotten, Christie Cotten and Faith Paschal; two nephews, Branden Cotten and Bryce Cotten; three loving aunts, Hannah Johnson of Mitchellvillr, MD, Delma Murdock (Fred) of Greensboro, N.C., Annette Jones (Billy) of Sanford, N.C.; two uncles, Billy Dowdy (Bertha) and Elmus Dowdy, Jr. both of Goldston, N.C.; a special friend Monica Redding of Goldston, N.C.; and a host of cousins and friends.
