On the evening of Friday, June 25, 2021, Vaughn Layton Mikeworth, was welcomed into the Communion of Saints, with his wife of 37 years, Yvonne, by his side at their home in Tallahassee, Florida. Born in Robinson, Illinois on November 26, 1950, he was a son of Joseph Luther Mikeworth and Lola Rudell Parker Mikeworth, of blessed memory.
He was a graduate of Eastern Illinois University where he attended on an athletic scholarship. Before retirement, he owned and operated a food distribution company (Westar Food Sales and Distribution). A faithful and active parishioner at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, he was a 4th Degree with the Knights of Columbus Council 13240, a former Grand Knight of Council 3521, Knights of Columbus District Deputy and District 1 Disaster Relief Coordinator. As such he was instrumental in the acquisition and outfitting of the 1st Emergency Response Trailer in the Panhandle and was active in the establishment of a second trailer. Vaughn was very active in the Men of Blessed Sacrament (MOBS), Christ Renews His Parish (CHRP) and was also active with several Boy Scouts projects.
His memories will be cherished by his wife of 37 years, Yvonne Dorothy Poettker Mikeworth; daughters, Heather Abenti (husband, Jonathan) and Laurel Mikeworth; grandchildren, Abraham Brantley, Isaiah, Jaron, Kyleigh, Zaira; sisters, Donna Sue Newlin (husband, Jim), Judy Krathwohl (husband, John) and Nan O’Dell; sister-in-law, Loretta Mikeworth; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He will be dearly missed by his in-laws, Mary Ann Poettker (mother-in-law) and brother and sisters-in-law, Debbie B. Poettker Christian, James B. Poettker, Gerhard H. Poettker, Patricia Ann Poettker and Kenneth R. Poettker. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by brothers and sister-in-law, Richard “Rick” Mikeworth (wife, Ginny) and David Mikeworth; and sisters and brothers-in-law, Sally Brang (husband, John), Rebecca Jo Adams (husband, Richard “Dick” Adams) and father-in-law James H. Poettker. A servant of God, upon diagnosis, Vaughn chose to become a participant in a Mayo Clinic Jacksonville Cancer study. At the time of death, he gave his body to the Anatomical Board of the State of Florida, Gainesville.
