Michael Edward Moss was born on February 1, 1949 in Indianapolis, Indiana and was the only child born to Ennis and Lucille Moss.
Michael attended Indianapolis public grade schools, graduated from Arsenal Technical High School, and studied at Indiana University.
Michael developed a love for music as a teenager, especially for Jazz. Through the years he acquired a collection of vinyl albums, a turntable, and speakers that he still has today. Being a lover of music, Michael took up the profession of being a DJ. He was hired as a DJ at parties for various Social Clubs, which were popular at that time. Michael was a member of a men’s Social Club called “The Mind Benders”.
After beginning his career at Indiana Bell as a Frame Man, he was soon drafted and served in the United States Army, achieving E5 Sergeant status before an Honorable Discharge was granted. After his time spent in the Army, he returned to Indiana Bell and was later promoted to a 2nd level Management position.
Michael and Debra Davis united in Holy Matrimony on August 6, 1977 and soon became a blended family of five with three boys, Brian, Andre, and Mike, Jr. Shannon René, the only daughter, was born unto this union on January 11, 1980 and shortly thereafter the entire family was uprooted to Illinois due to a job transfer to AT&T.
Michael was an avid sports fan and became a supporter of the professional teams in the city that he was living in at the time. He played Little League Baseball and Basketball for Arsenal Technical High School, where they were state runner up champions. He played basketball and softball for various work leagues as well. He also loved to play Racquetball, for which he received several trophies, and played tennis competitively. He shared these competitive skills and taught his children and grandchildren to play.
It was not only sports that Michael enjoyed sharing with his family, he also loved sharing his knowledge of business to assist others in business matters. His grandchildren especially went to him for advice on major purchases, such as buying a home or vehicle, etc. Sometimes he would give unsolicited advice too! For example, regarding their relationships. He would make sure he knew who his children’s friends were and the company they kept. His grandchildren thought he was Superman!
Although he was about business, Michael loved and cherished his wife, family and family time together. He always tried to take vacations that were for him and Debbie only, and a separate vacation that might include his adult children, grandchildren and/or close friends. It was important for Michael to be a part of and celebrate family achievements and events.
In October of 2019, Michael was diagnosed with an aggressive, malignant brain tumor that was mostly removed on November 4, 2019.
He was determined to manage his illness with the help of God, his physicians, and his wife and not let his illness manage him. Michael fought a good fight and if anyone asked, “How are you doing?”, he would reply, “I never feel bad” or “I feel pretty good”. He wanted to continue his life as “normal” as much as he could.
It was difficult to witness him go through these changes, as we know Michael goes about his life “his way” (even has a necklace charm to prove it). It was the same in dealing with his medical condition.
Michael transitioned to be with our Lord God on January 22, 2021. He is now resting peacefully in God’s arms!
Michael was preceded in death by his son, Michael Jr. and leaves to cherish his memories his loving and devoted wife, Debra; children, Brian K. Martin (Melissa), Andre L. Moss (Sherre) and Shannon R. Moss; grandchildren, Brittany, Raven, Andrea, Jalen, Aryanna, Tracy, Kole, Brannon and Bria; great-grandchildren, Bailee and Brysen; and a host of family, friends, and business associates.
