Mr. Larry A. Cowden, 69, of Hazel Green, Alabama, originally of Detroit, Michigan, departed this life on Friday, August 15, 2014.

Larry was reared in Detroit where he enjoyed building and riding motorcycles, camping, the outdoors, and tailoring. He graduated from Miller High School where he enjoyed running track and then attended Macomb County and Henry Ford Community Colleges. He joined the US Navy in 1966 and served two years aboard submarines.

Larry was baptized at the Mt. Zion Lutheran Church in Detroit. He retired from the Chrysler Corporation’s Dodge Main Plant after 20 years having been employed as a millwright. He also served as a UAW Union Steward.

As Larry’s health began to fail in 1993, he moved to San Antonio, Texas to be with his brother, Luther, and sister-in-law, Lula. He then moved with them to Hazel Green, Alabama in 2005 where he remained until his passing.

Larry had a passion for music, and he would often laugh and smile when he heard Motown tunes on the radio or TV. His favorites were the old classics from the 60s, especially Diana Ross and the Four Tops. Larry really enjoyed nature and relaxing by the pool or sitting on the porch watching the sunset. He also enjoyed helping his brother Luther with the landscaping at home. Larry held a special place in his heart for Detroit. He reminisced fondly about his childhood days in the Motor City.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Dorothy Cowden; His brother, Christian Cowden; His nephews, Michael Knaggs and Eric Cowden; His nieces, Susie Gritton, Lorna Cowden, Felicia Goggans-Jackson and Tiffany Cowden.

Larry leaves to cherish his memory: His brother and sister-in-law, Luther and Lula Cowden of Hazel Green, AL; His sister, Vivian Ahern of St. Petersburg, Florida; His sister-in-law, Gina Cowden; His nieces and nephews: Mitzi (Charlie) Johnson, Christian (Ann) Cowden, Sandra (Phillip) Ross, Steven (Joanna) Palmisano, Gia Davis, Alonzo Goggans, Nicole (Stephen) Anderson, and Luther B. Cowden, as well as a host of great-nieces and nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.
