Joseph N. Bielik, 77, of 65D Forest Road, Milford, beloved husband of Katharine M. (Short) Bielik, died peacefully on Saturday, June 12, 2010 at Milford Hospital from the combined effects of several long-term illnesses.
Born in Fairfield, CT on April 18, 1933, he was the son of the late Joseph A. and Catherine (Bakos) Bielik. A 1951 graduate of Roger Ludlow High School, he was a U.S. Navy Veteran of the Korean War, serving as an Aviation Electrician and In-flight Second Mechanic in Fleet Logistics Squadron Five (VR-5).
A long time resident of Milford and Orange, he was a renowned and respected figure in their Babe Ruth League baseball programs, managing the Orange 15 year old All Star team to a 2nd place finish in the 1978 state tournament. He was honored as the Orange Babe Ruth League Man of the Year in 1984, and served as the President of the Parkway Valley Senior Babe Ruth League. He was also an active member of the Orange American Legion Post 127. Prior to his illness he loved to travel, and he was an enthusiastic reader of military history, with a special interest in the causes, effects, and campaigns of World War I.
In addition to his wife of 54 years, he is survived by his children: Paula L. Baranowski and her husband Robert of Oxford; Christopher J. Bielik and his wife Rhonda of Beacon Falls; and Joseph A. Bielik and his wife Beth of Winsted, as well as his cherished grandchildren Erika L. and Melissa R. Baranowski and Ahna R. Bielik. He was predeceased by his grandson Nicholas A. Bielik. He is also survived by his brother Richard Bielik and his wife Nancy of Fairfield, his sister Rita Mead of Milford, his brother-in-law Alvin Short and his wife Sandy of Mohave Valley, AZ; his nephews Jeffrey Bielik and David Short and nieces Gretchen Bielik and Liz Johnson.
His vibrant and effusive personality will be remembered by all of his family and friends, and he will be missed greatly by all who loved him.
