Mr. John J. Donohue Jr., age 86, of Hamden, beloved husband of 60 years to Mildred Sileo Donohue, passed away peacefully on February 4, 2010 in Hamden.
The son of the late John J. and Fannie Moore Donohue Sr., born on June 24, 1923 in Bronx, NY. He received his B.A. at Columbia University, class of 1944. He served with pride and honor in the U.S. Army Signal Corps, during WWII and was a participant in the Battle of the Bulge. John received his M.A. at Teachers College, Columbia University, where he met his future bride, Mildred. He taught junior high school; worked for the federal government in Washington, DC, the NY State Labor Department, the Republic Aircraft on Long Island, NY, and was the Market Research Manager for U.S.
John was past Chairman of the Orange Democratic Town Committee and the Caucus of Connecticut Democrats, and served on the Amity Board of Education for 12 years. He recently had joined the Hamden Democratic Town committee. The Belgrade Lakes in Maine was his summer retreat for many years. He traveled throughout Ireland, Spain, France, Germany, Italy, Argentina, Canada, and of course the US.
John was a board member of the Amity League of Women Voters, former secretary of the Orange Rotary Club, and was on the Amity Board of Education from 1987 to 1999. He was also a Justice of the Peace, a district representative of Greater New Haven, past commander of the American Legion Post 127, past President of the Orange Democratic Town Committee, member of the Hamden Democratic Town Committee, founder of the CT Chapter Americans for Democratic Action, member of the Whitney Center residents council and was active lobbying for legislation in Hartford. John had a lifetime commitment to social justice and the common good.
In addition to his beloved wife Mildred, survivors include his two children Jeanne D. Miner and her husband Bruce of Wethersfield, and John J. Donohue III, professor of law, Yale University, and his wife Maureen of New Haven, six loving grandchildren Julia, Kevin, and Alison Miner, and Lauren, Aidan and Patrick Donohue, and a cherished great-grandson Anthony Miranda. He is also survived by five nieces and nephews.
