Giovanni “John” DiVenere, 95 of Bristol passed away on Monday February 8, 2010 at Bristol Hospital.

Giovanni was born on January 8, 1915 in Turi, Bari, Italy a son of the late Leonard and Lucia (Mastrofrancesco) DiVenere.

Mr. DiVenere was a World War II veteran in the Italian Army, having served in Albania, Ethiopia, and North Africa.  Captured in a tank battle in North Africa, he spent 1 ½ years in a British POW camp in Tunisia.  He came to the U.S. in 1952, worked at Ingraham Clock Company and various men’s stores as tailor, until he opened John the Tailor on School Street, which he ran with his wife Minnie for 35 years. Widowed at age 71 after 32 years of marriage, he then married Anna Sidlik. Snowbirds, John and Anna enjoyed their condo in Florida, where they were known for their dancing. Giovanni taught the importance of family above all else.

In addition to Anna, his wife of 22 years, he is survived by his two sons, Len and John DiVenere both of Bristol; his daughter Lucia DiVenere of Washington DC; his granddaughters, Sarah, Laura, Rachael, Elaina, Leah and Andrea; his grandsons, John Adam, Erik and Matthew and his two great-grandsons, Lincoln Giovanni and Adam.
