Deacon George (GW) Washington Bennett, 83, of Tallahassee, formerly of Augusta, GA answered the Master’s final call and peacefully slept away on Monday, July 13, 2020.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Dennis and Annie Bennett Sawyer; children, Terry L. Bennett, Vicky Nelson Smith and Willie James Bennett; and siblings, Annie Bell Footman, Cornelius Bennett, Jr., Elder Carl L. Bennett, Sr., Enoch Caldwell Bennett, Martha Anne Payne, Katie Barbara Scott, Lola Mae Davis Johnson and Elder Mack N. Bennett, Sr.; and former wife, Hallie Mitchell.
Mourning his passing but embracing his memory and legacy are his children, Sandy Bennett Jefferson and Georgetta Bennett, both of Tallahassee, Florida and Tommie L. Bennett (wife, Lisa) of Manassas, Virginia; grandchildren, Tia M. Simmons, Hallye A. Attaway, John Attaway and Amaree Attaway, all of Tallahassee, Florida, Blake F. Jefferson, of Fairfax, Virginia, Tanesia Thomas and Terrance Thomas, of Crawfordville, Florida; step-grandchildren, Marcus Calhoun and Brittany Elliot, both of Manassas, Virginia; siblings, Rupert Bennett (wife, Earlean) of Tallahassee, Florida and Dorothy Mack, of Bridgeport, Connecticut; son-in-law, Fredrick Smith, Sr., of Crawfordville, Florida and sister-in-law, Mary Bennett of Atlanta, Georgia. Also surviving are numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other extended family members and friends.
Deacon Bennett was born in Tallahassee, Florida on September 19, 1936. He attended the Original Lincoln High School prior to enlisting in the United States Army and honorably served during the Vietnam War. After 24 years, he retired with the final rank of Sergeant First Class.
During the 40 plus years he resided in Augusta, Georgia, he was a Deacon at both New Exodus Missionary Baptist Church and Johnson Grove Missionary Baptist Church. He enjoyed fishing and playing Pinochle with his old Army buddies at the American Legion.
