Mr. Edward Wallace Bonessi, Sr., 85, of Milford, beloved husband for 64 years Margaret Smith Bonessi, passed away peacefully at CT Hospice in Branford on Sunday, December 19, 2010. Son of the late Dominick R. and Anna Desiderio Bonessi, he was born on February 5, 1925 in New Haven, CT.
Edward served in the Army Air Corps during WWII in the Pacific Theater, and was awarded the Air Medal for meritorious achievement under fire over enemy territory. After the war, he attended the New Haven State Teacher’s College (SCSU) and earned Graduate Degrees from New York University and Michigan State University. Ed taught for many years in both the New Haven public school system and the West Haven High School, before becoming a Professor at Southern Connecticut State University where he taught in the Traffic Safety Center.
In Edward’s lifetime he was a Five Time Keynote Speaker at the National Highway Safety Council Annual Conference, a member of the President Dwight D. Eisenhower National Highway Safety Commission. Founder of Southern Connecticut State University’s Traffic Safety Center, which provided all Connecticut Driving Instructors advanced training and skid control, Connecticut Municipal Police Academy high speed and evasive maneuver training and skid control and Co-Developer of Zone Control Driving System for all AT&T and Baby Bell companies in the United States. He was the consulting author of Prentice Hall’s, “Man and The Motor Car” and before “Road Rage” was an everyday term, Edward was the author of “Are you a Psychological Time Bomb Behind the Wheel?”
In addition to his loving wife, Edward is survived by his five children, Barry Bonessi and his wife Holly of Milford, Bruce Bonessi and his wife Marjorie of Cheshire, Edward Bonessi, Jr. and his wife Raquel of Milford, Bradford Bonessi and his partner Jan Roelf Bult of Miami Beach, FL and Melissa Beler and her husband the late Joseph Beler, Jr. of West Haven. Eight Grandchildren Chelsea Sacco, Blake Bonessi, Edward Bonessi, III, Colleen Bonessi, Dominique Bonessi, Beau Bonessi, Drew Bonessi and Benjamin Bonessi. Four Great Grandchildren Ava Sacco, Andrew Sacco, Sophia Sacco and Gabriel Bonessi, he is also survived by his sister Katherine Bonessi Ceccarelli and her husband Arthur of Orange.
