Donald W. Johnston is finally at peace, after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease. He passed away on Tuesday, August 4, 2009 at the age of 72. He was the beloved husband for 37 years of Sally Staub Johnston, loving father of Donna Johnston Levin and her husband Louis, David Johnston and his wife Sheila, Denis Johnston and his wife Kelly and Christi Johnston Rice and her husband Bryan. He was the devoted grandfather of Adam and Michael Levin, Drew, Natalie, Nicholas and Rachael Johnston, Emily and Molly Johnston and Madison Rice. Don accomplished much during his lifetime. His greatest achievement was his devotion to his family of whom he was extremely proud. He was the brother of Edward “Buddy” Johnston, Judy Johnston Comeaux (Danny) and Lynn Johnston Naquin (Cookie). He was the brother-in-law of Raymond E. “Chuck” Staub, Jr. (Sam), Daniel J. “Rusty” Staub and Susan Staub Tully (Jerry). He was son of the late Henrietta Moreci and Alexander “Alex” Johnston. He is also survived by his Aunt Mary Johnston Aherns and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

Don was born on November 25, 1936. He was a graduate of Sacred Heart High School, attended Loyola University on a track scholarship, and graduated from Louisiana State University. After graduating from college he joined D. H. Holmes Company and worked there for 30 years and became D. H. Holmes Company’s last President and CEO. During his career he served on numerous boards and associations (St Elizabeth’s Home, United Way and YMCA). After Holmes closed, he worked with Junior Achievement of New Orleans. He served our country in the Air National Guard for six years. He was a member of “The Shepherds” a group of neighborhood friends who have remained friends for over 50 years.
