Donald Kay Sumpter, 76, of Tallahassee, passed away October 25, 2016, while visiting family in Kentucky.
A son of the late George and Wagie Miller Sumpter, he was born May 23, 1940, in Monticello, Kentucky. After proudly serving his country in the US Navy, he became an entrepreneur who owned and operated several businesses in the Tallahassee area, including two grocery stores, a restaurant, The Sweet Shop on FSU campus and a pool hall. Every year at the grocery stores, he gave a neighborhood Christmas party to provide the families with cakes and toys. His hobbies included shooting pool, fishing and playing poker.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Laverne Goe Sumpter; children, Jeff Upchurch, Donita (Allen) Perry and George Donald (Grace) Sumpter; grandchildren, Michael Sumpter, Christopher Dantes, Christian Dantes, Lauren Hayes, Nicki Perry, Chasity Perry, Krystina Biggs Hayley Guffey, Damien Upchurch, Jacob Upchurch and Reagan Upchurch; great-grandchildren, Haylie Hayes, Hannah Hayes, Jamond White, Jase Harris, Trae Barfield and Titus Barfield, Korbyn Guffey and Addyson Guffey. His siblings, Billy Sumpter, Peggy Jo Duggins and Carol Ann Shaw also survive him, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He is preceded in death by his siblings, Bobby Sumpter, Leroy Sumpter, Gary Dale Sumpter, Doris Faye Sumpter and Patsy Atkinson.
