Charles Lee Helms, 89, of Havana, Florida, passed away on Sunday, May 23, 2021, at the Big Bend Hospice House, while surrounded by his loving family.
A son of Lester Horace Helms, Sr. and Lizzie Belle Haisten Helms, of blessed memory, he was born in Bessemer, Alabama on July 22, 1931. He is also preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Davis Helms; brothers, Lester Horace Helms, Jr. and John Daniel “JD” Helms, Sr.; sister, Zoe Ruth Helms Donham and Marjorie Helms Bilbo; and great-grandson, Oliver. Survivors include his daughters, Scarlet Ann Groves (husband, Clifton Hoyt Groves) and Sheila Diane Hyker (Kenneth Robert Hyker); grandsons, Bradford Lee Ottinger and Charles Aubrey Beard; granddaughters, Angel Marie Groves, Samantha Dora Widmer (companion, Jeff Clark), Stephanie Diane Areson (husband, Gary Areson, III) and Katellyn Rose Hyker; great-grandsons, Damien, Gary, IV, Thomas; and great-granddaughter, Chloe, as well as one great-grandson on the way. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive. He graduated from Auburn Technical College with a Bachelor’s Degree in Agriculture and Engineering, and worked as a draftsman and steel engineer for many years.
