His Life and Legacy
Casper Levels, Sr., affectionately known as, “Castro”, was born in Louisville, Kentucky on February 28, 1928, which was a leap year. At an early age he with his family moved to Indianapolis, Indiana.
Casper received his education in the Indianapolis Public School System. He graduated from Crispus Attucks High School which was the first segregated High School for African Americans in Indianapolis.
Casper enlisted to serve in the United States Army and was stationed in Okinawa, Japan. After retiring from the military on May 16, 1955, he went on to work for Kingan’s Meat Packing Company. He was later employed by the General Motors Corporation until his retirement from that job in 2006.
Casper was always the life of the party. He enjoyed hanging out with his friends and family any chance he could. He felt that is what kept him young. He also loved to talk and was filled with so much knowledge. The way he told the stories of his life endeavors you did not realize the history lessons you were receiving. He talked about the Great Flood of Kentucky that he and his family survived. He would often talk about his early adulthood and being a part of the Indiana Avenue legacy, going to the Madame C. J. Walker Theater and the jazz scene in the 1950’s, which was a staple for blacks to be able to socialize with one another
He was a proud member of the American Legion Post # 249. He was one of the oldest members in age, but he was definitely one of the youngest at heart. He was so proud of these experiences and many more.
Casper Levels, Sr. departed this on life April 17, 2021, at the age of 93 years 1month and 28 days. “Castro” was preceded in death by his parents, James and Sarah Levels; siblings, Jeannie Mae Thurman, Needham Sylvester and Joe Henry Levels; and daughters, Alice Griffin and Brenda Levels.
