In the early morning of August 23, 2022, at 7:15 a.m., with family by his side, God in his infinite wisdom and mercy, stopped by and alleviated the pain and suffering of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, son, brother and uncle to many and called him to his eternal rest.
He was born on January 26, 1969 in Atlanta, Georgia to Carlie Murphy, Sr. and Phyllis Jones. As our grandson Ayden says, Carlie had the best childhood evahhhh!!! He was showered by love and spoiled by his aunts and uncles on both sides of his family and his grand- parents absolutely adored him! He was preceded in death by his paternal great-grandparents, Robert and Lora Murphy, his paternal grandfather, Clarence Wilson, his maternal great-grandmother Maxie Cunningham and his maternal grandmother Clara Mae Jones, an uncle, Clarence Murphy and an aunt, Margaret Wyatt.
Although Carlie was born in Atlanta, he and his mom later moved to Decatur where he attended Toney Elementary school for his primary years and was a proud member of the 1987 graduating class of Druid Hills High School. Carlie also attended Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. In 1989 Carlie joined the United States Navy as a boatswins mate. In total he committed twenty-four years of his life to serving his country in the Navy and Navy Reserves. He retired from the Navy in 2014. During his tenure in the military he fought in the following conflicts – Operation Desert Storm, Desert Shield, Enduring Iraqi Freedom and the War in Afghanistan in 2011.
Carlie believed in commitment and that was evident in the time that he served in the military and his civilian job.
Carlie enjoyed playing sports in high school football, basketball and track. He was an avid Atlanta Braves and Hawks fan as well as anyone that knows him, knows that he was the biggest Pittsburgh Steelers fan you would ever meet.
In 1997, Carlie had a part time job as a security guard working in the AT&T building in midtown. It was here where he crossed paths and met the woman who would become his friend and partner in life, Adrienne Salter. When they met, they had both been married before and each had two children from their previous relationships.
Carlie and Adrienne were committed to nurturing their four children and their marriage. They supported their children in both their academic and extracurricular activities and they made a concerted effort to take time out to travel the world together especially to celebrate their anniversary each year.
Carlie’s memory will live on in the hearts of his wife, Adrienne Y. Salter-Murphy, his three daughters; Brianna Suzette Murphy, Lora Marie Cheeseboro (Reggie), Kiera McNeill (Julian); his only son, Arman Ysante Steed (Kamina); his three grandchildren, Olivia Marie Boykins, Ayden Kentrell Steed and Asyr Kasson Ysante Steed; his parents, Carlie Murphy, Sr. and Phyllis Jones Mathis; two aunts Jimmie Batten and Gloria Murphy; his sister, Carla Murphy; four sisters-in-law, LaTonia Johnson, Carolyn Hughes, Denise Garner and Janet Salter; his cousin/brother; Everett Tony Murphy, godchildren; Rashaad Carter, Aaron Guice, Markell and Tamia McRae, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
