Mother Mary Jennifer (Janet Carroll), 75, a member of the Daughters of Mary of the Immaculate Conception, died of cancer on Sunday, February 28, 2021. A native of South Norwalk, Connecticut, Mother Jennifer was born on August 8, 1945 and was the second of three children of John and Maria (Von Kaentzel) Carroll. Mother Jennifer graduated from Brien McMahon High School in Norwalk, CT and worked as a children’s librarian before entering her life of service with the Daughters of Mary in 1967. She professed her first vows in 1970 and served in the ministry of education throughout her religious life. A committed and ardent teacher, Mother Jennifer especially enjoyed teaching junior and senior high students and encouraged excellence in science fair projects, community service, and learning history through trips to New York, Philadelphia, Washington DC and Rome. She served at Sacred Heart School in New Jersey and in New Britain, CT, and also taught at the Marion Educational Clinic and Mary Immaculate Academy. She was committed to continuous learning, earning several master’s degrees in religious studies and education. Mother Jennifer served in many leadership roles in the Daughters of Mary. She was elected at an early age to leadership as a Council Member, went on to serve as Vice General then began service as Superior General in 2007. As Superior General, a role she continued until her passing, she led the oversight of Daughters of Mary ministries and affiliated projects in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York. Mother Jennifer was devoted to the community of New Britain and, alongside the sisters, led several projects to benefit the community during her service, including expanding skilled nursing facilities and adult day care by converting the Motherhouse HUD housing, modernizing St. Lucian’s Residence including a solar panel project to benefit all facilities, and volunteering on numerous boards. Mother Jennifer was filled with good humor and devotion to the work of the Lord, was a great fan of UConn Women’s basketball and the New York Yankees, and enjoyed spending time with family, especially with trips to New York City. She will be deeply missed by the Daughters of Mary, the community of Sacred Heart, her family, and all who knew and loved her. Mother Jennifer is survived by her brother Robert Carroll and his children Thomas and Patricia, her sister Christine Rose and her children David, Micah, and Leah, and several grandnieces and grandnephews.
