Morris Melvin Carpenter, 83, Anderson, passed away on January 27, 2008, at Community Hospital in Anderson. He was born in Roachdale, IN. but moved to Anderson with his parents Herndon and Hazel Scott Carpenter in the early 40s.
He graduated from Anderson High School in 1942 and enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard in December of 1942. He was on Convoy duty to the Mediterranean Theatre and discharged in October 1945. In 1950 he became a police officer in Anderson. After being shot in the line of duty, he accepted a disability retirement in 1962. Later, he went to work for Heckaman Buick and became a New Car Sales Manager for twelve years. He was a fifty-year member of Fellowship Masonic Lodge #681 and Scottish Rite. He was a thirty-four-year member of Murat Shrine of Indianapolis, past president and a lifetime member of Murat Motor Corp., member of Madison County Shrine Club, and past president of Madison County Desert Patrol. He was also a lifetime member of the Fraternal Order of Police, member of American Legion Post 127, and past member of Elks 209 for thirty-two years. He also was a member of Whetstone Christian Church. Morris enjoyed parading with the Madison County Desert Patrol, camping with the Winnebago Clubs of Indiana, and watching NASCAR races.
Morris is survived by his wife, Anita Carpenter; two daughters: Shirley L. Carpenter and Sharon K. Carpenter of Noblesville. Two grandsons: Donald Roudebush Jr. and Mark Roudebush of Noblesville. Also, surviving is his special friend Jerry McColloum.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, and sister, an aunt, Pearl Scott Carpenter, and grandmother, Girtie Scott.
