With great sorrow, the family of Morris Aaron Benjaminson of New York City announces his passing on Monday May 22 in New York, at the age of 86. Born August 6, 1930 in the Bronx, NY he voluntarily enlisted and served in the US Army during the Korean War. Following his return, he earned advanced degrees, culminating in a Ph.D. from New York University with a concentration in Developmental Genetics and Cytochemistry/Micrurgy.
Professionally, Dr. Benjaminson was an inventor, researcher, and educator. He held numerous patents and published more than 100 peer-reviewed papers for professional journals. His pioneering work developing in vitro edible meat growth systems for off-earth NASA missions was featured in many popular media and is the foundation and inspiration for numerous current projects internationally. Much of his distinguished career focused on his passion for the future of the United States space program, highlighted by three different NASA SBIR awards for space shuttle and International Space Station research proposals.
An only child, Morris was blessed to see his family grow as his daughter, Brina Benjaminson Gartner (Sheldon) of Yorktown Heights, NY and son, Ari Benjaminson (Laura) of Gaithersburg, Maryland started their own families. In addition to seven grandchildren, Morris (known as “Abba”) had three wonderful great-grandchildren.
Morris is also survived by the mother of his children and good friend, Barbara Benjaminson.
