Norman L. Mitchell, USAF, Ret., 74, of New Baden, IL died Wednesday, December 7, 2011 at Memorial Hospital in Belleville, IL. He retired from the Security Police for the United States Air Force in 1975 and as a GS-13 at Scott AFB as the Chief, Information Security Division in 1998. He was the former Chief of Police in New Baden, IL and a member of the Air Force Security Police Association, Vietnam Security Police Association, Sampson Air Force Base Association, the American Legion Post 321, and the Shiloh Valley Mustang Association. He was a volunteer worker at the Highland Animal Shelter.
He was preceded in death by his father, Donald Mitchell; his mother and step-father, Mary and Don Bain; and a grandson, Eric Wilken. Surviving are his wife, Margaret June Mitchell of New Baden, IL; two daughters, and sons-in-law, Barbara (Eugene) Wilken and Susan (Robert) Sommers of New Baden, IL; five grandchildren, Robert (Tiffany) Sommers of New Baden, IL, Rachel (Tim Cronin) Sommers of Mascoutah, IL, Christine (Josh) Hearst of Sherman Oaks, CA, Diane (Sean) Reed of Dothan, AL, and Jennifer (Nate) Yukna of Trenton, IL; a great-granddaughter, Evelyn Claire Yukna and a great grandson, Elijah Yukna, both of Trenton, IL; and a great-granddaughter, Mallory Sommers of New Baden, IL.
