Miriam Esther (Litten) Long, 93, former resident of South Bend and recent resident of Greenwood, Indiana, passed away on Thursday, April 15, 2021 in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Miriam was born on February 16, 1928 in Phillipsburg, Ohio to the late Byron Litten & Josephine (Richter) Litten. Miriam married the love of her life, the late Robert Long, in 1949.
Miriam worked for the Penn-Harris Madison School Corporation, serving Elm Road Elementary School in Mishawaka, Indiana, as a teacher and then as principal for over 35 years. She also was employed as the Supervisor of Student Teachers at St. Mary-of-the-Woods College.
Miriam was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, a professional society for women educators. She formerly attended the Gospel Center Missionary Church in South Bend, Indiana and later became a member of the Community Church of Greenwood in Greenwood, Indiana, where she served as an Assistant Children’s Minister. Miriam’s legacy to her family, friends and coworkers was one that exemplified Christian service, generosity and love. She will be greatly missed.
Miriam is survived by her three children, Norman K. (Linda) Long of Needham, Indiana, Jean Wehling of Danville, Indiana, and Jane Eaton of Punta Gorda, Florida. She is also survived by six grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, her parents, Byron & Josephine, her brother, Robert Litten, and her sister, Dorothy Taylor.
