Minnie Olga (McLemore) Yates, 91, of Elk City, OK, died Friday, May 11, 2007 in Alamogordo, NM.
Mrs. Yates was born August 11, 1915 in Elk City, OK to Thomas Henry and Minnie Ida (Hudspeth) McLemore. She was a member of a pioneer family who moved to Elk City in a covered wagon. She worked in her parent’s grocery store and made deliveries by driving the delivery truck beginning at the age of 9. She attended school in Cheyenne and Elk City and graduated from Elk City High School. She also drove her father all over the countryside to secure the right of way for Route 66 when he was an Oklahoma State Representative. She married Thomas Jefferson “Happy” Yates May 9, 1931 in Sayre, OK. They were livestock dealers for many years before his death, December 1, 1975. She was a dental assistant for over twenty-three years for Dr. Storm and was later the night auditor at the Best Western, retiring in 1993. She was a member of Main Street Baptist Church in Elk City. She was a lifelong resident of Elk City until 2005 when she moved to Alamogordo to be closer to her daughter.
She is preceded in death by her parents Thomas Henry and Minnie Ida (Hudspeth) McLemore; her husband, T. J. “Happy” Yates; an infant son, Thomas Jefferson Yates, Jr.; her brothers, Delmer McLemore, Rudolph McLemore, Wilber McLemore, D. Allen McLemore; her sisters, Bessie Perkey, Oleta McDonald, Eunice Pierce; her sisters-in-law, Lois Cotter and Imogene Nusz.
Survivors include her daughter, Barbara House and husband, John of Alamogordo; four grandchildren, Johnettia House of Alamogordo, Mark House and wife, Diane of Pueblo West, CO; Kent House and wife, Lisa and Amy Weider and husband Ossi, all of Alamogordo; six great grandchildren, Michael and Julia House of Pueblo West, CO, Micela and Mark House and Megan and Madeline Weider, all of Alamogordo; numerous nieces and nephews including, Robin Raiford of Dallas, TX, John McLemore and his wife Johnna, Eric Denton and wife, Stephanie and Jack and Carian White; sister-in-law, Nellie McLemore and her dear friend, Marie Thomas, all of Elk City, OK.
