Minnie “Ma” Griffin, 94, of Brooklyn, New York, passed away on Thursday, June 18, 2020.
Born June 20, 1925, in Wallaceton, Virginia, Ma was number three of the six children of the late Oscar Griffin and Hattie Sawyer Griffin.
Ma received a basic education and spent her early years in rural “Jim Crow” Virginia. During World War II she was employed at the Norfolk
Naval Yard supporting the war effort. After the war ended Ma left Virginia for Brooklyn, New York to help her eldest sister, who was about
to give birth to her first child. Ma quickly fell in love with New York and decided to stay. Over the ensuing years Ma would give birth to and
raise five children, as well as play a major role in raising several grand children.
Ma is survived by son, Bryant Griffin, of Raleigh, North Carolina, and daughter, Yvette Griffin, of Brooklyn, New York; 22 grandchildren, 42
great grand and 9 great, great grand.
In addition to her parents, Ma was predeceased by her sisters Cornelia Fulton, Elizabeth Austin; brothers, Alexander Griffin, Charles Griffin
and Herbert Griffin; daughters, Arlene Smith, Delores Berry, and Gail Pringle; grandchildren, Trence Smith, Tyjuan Smith, Tyeka Smith; best
friend, Virginia Spruill; boyfriend, William Marimow.
