Milvia Rita Schmoyer (Spessot) passed away in serene and abiding peace just before noon on Friday, June 21st, 2019.
Face-to-face and hand-in-hand with her loving, devoted husband of 54+ years, Barry, and surrounded by her three children, Steven, Mark, and Erica, the feisty and courageous Milvia drew her final breath from a beautiful life she truly lived to the fullest–in every moment and with every breath she had taken before that one.
Milvia was born in the shadows of the foothills of the Italian Alps, in the postcard-perfect town of Cormons, Italy on June 7th, 1941. The first of two daughters of Germano and Lidia Spessot (Mauri), Milvia spent her entire childhood in the Friuli Region of Northern Italy. Milvia studied in England for a short time then returned to Italy to receive her university degree in the Montessori method of teaching from the University of Udine.
On Valentine’s Day of 1964, as fate (and Cupid) would have it (and after months of advances from a bold American Air Force Lieutenant), Milvia finally said, “Si”… and settled in for a date with Barry.
The Air Force whirlwinds blew early and often, setting the Schmoyers on a course of family adventure for the next 25 years. Steven and Mark were born two years apart in Italy, while Barry served in the Vietnam War. Despite the toll of early separation, Milvia demonstrated her intense loyalty to her husband and family, raising her two young sons, teaching English, and writing almost daily notes of love and affirmation to her deployed husband. Upon his return from Vietnam, they left Milvia’s beloved Italy for the United States, rounding out the family with Erica’s birth in July, 1970.
After nine more challenging but exciting moves over the next 18 years, Milvia and Barry settled back in Florida in early 1989. In each of those moves, the “Army of Milvia” continued to grow, and surpassed in both size and strength any of the military units her beloved Colonel commanded during his Air Force career.
Milvia Schmoyer had a heart-light within her that was a homing beacon to everyone in her life. That beacon drew us in. And we just wanted to stay there. Warming ourselves by it. It’s the kind of light that never goes out. And so we carry it with us. All of us. For Always. Per Sempre.
