Millie Benfield has left a huge hole in our hearts and lives. She raised and loved 4 children through the plaid bell bottom, tortoise shell glasses, leave-on-your-bike-in-the-morning-and-just-be-back-by-dinner 1960’s and 70’s. She was born in Detroit and on their honeymoon in 1957, she and her husband Wilcomb traveled to Colorado for him to start his new job at Martin Marietta. Millie missed her friends and family in Detroit, but loved Colorado and their home in Dreamhouse Acres in Centennial.

Millie thought of herself as shy, but she made and kept friends easily and genuinely. She was the first person to welcome a newcomer with grace and kindness. She made everyone she met feel special. She never weighed 100 pounds even soaking wet, but her children and all her friends will tell you she was strong and stubborn – if she didn’t want to do something, it wasn’t going to happen. She passed that trait to the entire Benfield clan.

After the kids got older, Millie worked as an assistant in the Littleton Public Schools, including as the assistant to the principal at Littleton High School. After she retired, she loved volunteering at the Littleton Public Library.

Millie loved playing golf and bowling, and watching every other sport, especially tennis, golf, and the Rockies. She shared lifelong friendships with her sewing group (we never saw many sewing projects) and bridge groups (they did play cards – loudly).

She was proud of her children (Don (Pam), Linda (Steve Wallace), John (Wendy), and Paul (Kym)), and enjoyed sharing in their accomplishments, sports, milestones, lives and vacations. She believed in us and therefore we believed in ourselves. She was even prouder of her 11 grandchildren (Miranda, Patrick, Hannah, Josh, Ben, Natasha, Jessica, Mikelle, Madeline, Reid, Treyton), and her 8 great grandchildren (Bennett, Harry, Hailey, Hadley, Logan, Sam, Reagan, Henry – and very soon, Baby Millie). She will be enormously missed by her baby sister Kathie Nicely who can’t try to boss her around anymore.
