Mrs. Mildred Murray Torian, age 70, of Collinsville, Virginia passed away on Thursday, February 25, 2010 at her home. She was born in Virgilina, Virginia on February 19, 1940, the daughter of Cabell Solomon and Mary Ellen Murray, both deceased. She is also preceded in death by her brother, Glenn Edward Murray. Mildred was the proud wife of Samuel Mason Torian, III, her lifelong sweetheart, whom she met while they were still in high school. They were married in 1962 following her graduation from the College of William and Mary with a Bachelors degree in Early Childhood Education. Together, they moved to Clifton Forge and later to Roanoke with Mildred serving as an elementary school teacher in each town. They moved with their two children to Collinsville in 1972. As Sam settled in to his new job at Burch-Hodges-Stone, Mildred was drawn once again to the field of education. Because her own children were still young, she opened Ferndale Nursery School in her home’s basement in 1973, teaching her own children as well as a number of others from the community. Under Mildred’s dedicated and caring leadership, that modest operation grew exponentially over the years. In 1976, the family moved into a new home that provided space for two additional classrooms and, then in 1980, Beaver Hills Early Learning Center was opened off of Kings Mountain Road in Collinsville. Over the course of the past 37 years, more than a thousand children have received a strong educational foundation under her tutelage. It was not uncommon for children to graduate from Beaver Hills’ kindergarten class reading on a third grade level and former students are now sending their own children to Beaver Hills. While many Henry County residents know Mildred as either, their child’s, or their grandchild’s teacher, her community involvement did not end at the schoolhouse steps. She was an active member and leader at First Baptist Church of Collinsville since moving to the area, singing in the choir, teaching Sunday School and serving on countless committees.
