Mildred “Millie” Idalia Hanley was born on October 18, 1928 in Brooklyn, New York. She was the youngest of five children born to proud parents, Luke and Maude Seale; both born in Barbados, West Indies.

Millie attended Jefferson High School in Brooklyn New York. She pursued a college education in her forties and received a Teaching Credential from San Diego State University. She retired after seventeen years of teaching grade school children. After retiring, she continued to work in private schools focusing on tutoring children who struggled with reading. Millie was responsible for assisting both of her children in achieving advanced degrees. She also assisted two of her grandchildren and many nieces and nephews in reaching their dreams of advanced degrees.

Along with volunteering in the community, Millie spent time writing cookbooks and eventually advanced to writing her memoirs. She enjoyed collecting salt and pepper shakers, a passion she began in 1966 during a family vacation. She owned over ten thousand shakers, undeniably the largest collection in San Diego. In 2003, Millie published “Millie’s Collectibles”, about her prized collection.

Millie was an avid bowler and belonged to a Ladies 600 Club in San Diego, where she was proud of her 243 game with the use of her 10-pound ball.

One of her banner achievements was helping start the local chapter of “Woman Helping Woman”. This empowering group is responsible for scholarships and uplifting all women to achieve their goals and has been thriving for over two decades.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Claudia; siblings, Arthur, Thelma, James and Enid. On Thursday, August 8, 2013, Millie was called home to be with The Lord. She leaves to cherish her memory her loving husband of sixty-three years, George; her son, Bruce; grandchildren, Tifani, Christopher, Bruce Jr., Alexander and Adrian and a host of family and friends who loved her and will miss her dearly.
