Mildred Kelsen died peacefully at Milford Hospital after a brief illness on October 20, 2014 at the age of 94. She leaves behind a loving family, daughter Sandra Morgan and her husband Brechin, daughter Barbara Smith and her husband Michael, grandson Tyson Greifzu and his wife Jessica and their sons Sebastian and Lucas, brother Carl Highers and sister Marion Clark along with many nieces and nephews.
Midge was born August 24, 1920 in Gallatin, TN to Alvin and Flora Belle Highers. The family moved to Oneida, NY while she was still a young child and the family eventually grew to 10 children. She married Kenneth Kelsen whom she met in high school. During WWII, Ken served in the army in the South Pacific while Midge worked for the war effort in Washington, DC. After the war they moved to Syracuse, NY, where Ken attended university. His career in accounting and computer technology took the family to various areas between Syracuse and Albany, to Valley Forge, PA, to Ann Arbor, MI, and finally to Pittsford, NY. Midge remained in Pittsford after his death until three years ago when she moved to Milford to live with her daughter Sandra.
Midge is remembered for her love of dancing to Big Band music and square dancing with Ken, bridge games, gardening, travel, and her devotion to her husband and to raising her daughters, especially her encouragement of their educational and career pursuits. Until her last few months, she remained strong and healthy, maintaining her home and gardens until her late 80’s and helping in Sandy’s garden even during her last summer. In July she accompanied her daughters on a long-anticipated trip to see Mount Rushmore.
