Michelle Yvonne Cousins-Scoggins was born on July 16, 1943, in Denver, Colorado to her parents, Craig R. Cousins and Verneice Stephens Cousins. She was the first of two children born in the family. As a child, she was a natural born leader because she was the oldest and her sister, Yvette and cousin, Dale had to listen to her. She was given the nickname, “Honey Dripper.” That was the name of her favorite song by Joe Liggins and the Honey Drippers. Michelle received her formal education in Denver, Colorado where she graduated from Cathedral High School. She furthered her education by attending the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, Colorado, Northeastern Junior College in Sterling, Colorado and Barnes Business College in Denver, Colorado.
