Michael Thomas Robinson, 71, died Tuesday (April 6, 2010) at Elkhart General Hospital following a brief illness. Mike was born in Columbus, Ohio, on Feb. 18, 1939, to Page H. and Nella Adelaide (Ward) Robinson, who preceded him in death.

He worked in the advertising department of The Elkhart Truth before beginning his 33-year career as a rural mail carrier for the U. S. Postal service. He carried mail in Baugo Township and referred to Jimtown as “the center of the universe.” His thoughtfulness and commitment to his postal patrons led to friendships that lasted long after his retirement in 1997.

Mike’s parents were among those who began the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Elkhart in 1961, to which Mike devoted many years and numerous hours in multiple volunteer positions. At the Church Community Services food pantry, Mike was one of those “weekly” volunteers who showed up almost every day to help anywhere he was needed. In recent years, he had become a daily friend to the folks at Sunrise Restaurant, where they happily discussed politics and shared terrible jokes.

He was a rock for his wife, Marta (Moxie) Robinson, and was as devoted to her recently deceased father and brother as if they were his own. Mike also leaves behind a brother, Barrett F. (Janet) Robinson in Lafayette and a sister, Clarinda Watkins of Las Cruces, N.M.

He will be dearly missed by his children, son Jeff (Conda) Robinson and daughter Tracy Bailey, both of Elkhart, and their mother, Peggy Jo Fulk; daughter Wendy Robinson of Elkhart and two sons, Gary of South Bend and Tim (Katrina Jones) Robinson of New Orleans, La., and their mother, Judy Robinson. He also leaves behind eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Mike was a loyal friend and his circle of caring included those with fur and feathers, including his two cats, his friends’ pets, strays and various and sundry wild things.

His body has been cremated, with Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St., Elkhart, handling the arrangements. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.billingsfuneralhome.com.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be given to Church Community Services, P.O. Box 2346, Elkhart, IN 46515.
