Michael “Mickey” Sciortino was born 1907 in Bridgeport, CT the son of Michelangelo and Rose Sciortino. He began working at the Bridgeport Arcade Barbershop at the age of 13 where he cut hair for some of the entertainers from the Barnum & Bailey Circus and many of the prominent industrialists of the day. He moved to Trumbull in 1913 with his family where they settled on a farm and vineyard now known as Sciortino Road. He contracted tuberculosis at the age of 19 and was sent to Gaylord Farms Sanitarium. Despite a bleak prognosis and the loss of one lung, Mickey made a complete recovery and in 2001 was honored by Gaylord Farms as their oldest living TB survivor. Mickey was well known throughout Trumbull and Monroe. He owned several businesses including Trumbull Land & Title, Sciortino Insurance Agency and the Long Hill Barbershop. He was a lifetime member of the Trumbull Historical Society, an officer of the Master Barbers Association and founder of Old Mine’s Park in Trumbull. He had many hobbies and pastimes including gardening, coin collecting, antique refurbishing, cooking and collecting historic photos, many of which were donated to the Town of Trumbull Historical Society. Mickey never “retired” and was actively involved in business and his other interests until well into his 90’s. In 1939 he married his loving wife of 56 years, Olympia Turco, who predeceased him in 1995. Mickey & Ollie raised six children, Rosemary Clegg, Michael Sciortino his wife Dorothy, Jane Roberts and her husband James, Thomas Sciortino, Robert Sciortino and Richard Sciortino and his wife Elizabeth. His sister Virginia MacMulkin of Newport, RI and brother Arthur of Council Bluff’s IA also survive him. Mickey has seventeen grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He leaves behind many loving nieces and nephews and countless friends.
