Michael Eugene McGee was born July 30, 1922 to John Sylvester McGee and Leora Amanda Irwin McGee, on a farm near Melrose, Iowa and passed away from this earthly life August 23, 2011 at the age of 89 years and 24 days.
Mike had eight brothers and 4 sisters with two surviving; Marcella Zacanti (Leo, deceased) of Palo Alto, California and Jerry McGee & wife Dollie of Chariton, Iowa.
Mike spent his early years around Melrose and later moved with his family to the Chariton area, attending Braden and other Chariton schools, living in the country and later moving into town. He had lived in his home at 821 N. 14th St. nearly 50 years until his health began to fail the last few years and then lived at the Chariton Manner.
On January 28, 1943 during WWII, Mike was drafted into the army. His brother Ray accompanied Mike when he went to take his physical. Not wanting his brother to go alone, Ray volunteered and went too. They both completed boot camp together at Camp Howse, Texas, but were separated at that point.
Though Mike never married his door was always open to his large family including nearly 30 nieces and nephews and many, many friends. Family was very important to Mike and he kept every printed article about them and their achievements along the way, leaving behind reams of old newspapers throughout the years.
Michael McGee will be greatly missed.
