Mr. Michael Leroy “Hertsel” Hertsel, 74, of Middlebury, passed away quietly at home on Sunday, June 19, 2022 at 4:07 pm. Born in Elkhart on October 18, 1947, Hertsel was the son of the late Pete and Doris (Morgan) Hertsel. In 1968, he married Marsha L. Kettering, who has remained at his side ever since and survives him at home.
Also surviving Hertsel are his daughters Heather (Randy) Bryant of Elkhart and Missy (Curtis) Duttenhaver of Edwardsburg; his sisters Susie (Larry) Tebo of Elkhart and Nancy (John) Cook of Goshen; grandchildren Dustin (Alicia) Bryant of Nappanee, Tyler (Kaitlyn) Bryant of Wawaka, Colin and Deven Duttenhaver, both of Edwardsburg, and Sydney Bryant of Elkhart; and great granddaughter Charli Bryant of Nappanee. Also surviving is Hertsel’s feline buddy Sammy and a host of extended family, good friends and work buddies.
Hertsel was retired as a semi-truck driver for Wesco Distribution of Elkhart at the time of his passing but he had traditionally been a tool and die machinist for nearly 20 years, mostly at Vincent-Bach.
He was an avid outdoorsman and loved to fish and tie his own flies. He was also a loving dad and husband, a pretty good guitar player, and a member of the FIT team (First Impressions) at Crossroads Community Church, where he had worshiped for about 10 years. He also loved cooking outdoors on the grill and following all sorts of conspiracy theories, especially documentaries and programs on the existence of aliens and Bigfoot.
