Michael Jefferson Nichols, 72, departed this world for a better place; with family by his side on Saturday, February 19th, 2022. Our loss became his comfort and reward. He is now enjoying a reunion with relatives and friends that have gone on before him.

Commonly known as “Mike”, he was born May 9th, 1949 in Indianapolis to William & Anna Nichols. He was one of the youngest of 5 siblings. Mike graduated from Decatur Central High School with the class of 1968. He met his wife, Wanda, at the Ben Franklin Five and Dime store in Brightwood. They fell in love and at the age of 23 he married his sweetheart on June 17, 1972 in Indianapolis.

Mike was a hard worker and was employed at Ryerson Steel for 30 years; followed by a few diverse jobs. Most would consider him a “jack of all trades” as he was skilled and talented in heating & air, plumbing, carpentry, auto mechanics and so much more. After retirement, he spent the rest of his life mostly doing whatever he wanted and as he liked.

Mike was a kind-hearted, generous man; always giving his time to others and willing to lend a helping hand any way he could. The simplest pleasures in life brought great joy to him. He had a passion for his family, fishing, hunting, Native American music, food, traveling to Monticello, KY to visit his wife’s old homestead and catch up with relatives. He had an uncanny ability to turn a 2-minute story into a 20-minute narrative, sparing no details!

Mike was a proud father and leaves behind his two children and their spouses, Robin (Jay) Lewis and Michael “Tommy” (Kelly) Nichols. He taught them how to be a good person, and to have a desire and determination to work hard. He is also survived by 2 grandchildren, Isaiah “Zaiah” and Aaron “Bubba Joe”, one sister; Sue Cox, a host of loving in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. His priority was always family and he took great pride in their accomplishments.

Mike is preceded in death by his wife Wanda (Vaughn) Nichols; parents William & Anna Nichols; brothers, Jerry & William Nichols and sisters, Cindy Dicks and Patricia Hall.

Even though he has expired from this earth, his loving heart left a beacon of light for all. Mike will be deeply missed by many and forever in our hearts. His memory will be honored every day. Let’s start now and pay homage by doing an unexpected random act of kindness in remembrance of him.
