Michael Gerald Smith, 75, of Terre Haute, passed away at 3:55 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2016, in his home surrounded by his family. Michael was born June 30, 1941, to Lee Roy Smith and Therese Evans Smith, in Hymera.
He had a great love for his children and grandchildren. He was the type of person who never met a stranger. He was the most stubborn, funny, caring, loving papaw there ever was. He had no filter when it came to telling someone what was on his mind. He was a hardworking man who loved to be on his tractors cutting hay, riding his 4-wheeler and caring for his horses. He was the best. He will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his wife and soul mate of 22 years, Bonnie; daughter, Theresa Hemrich and her husband Larry; sons, Matt Smith and his wife Angela, Rich Smith and his wife Kathy, Steve Smith and his wife Angie, Mick Smith and his wife Pam, John Harris, Kirk Harris and his wife Patti and Dwight Harris; a brother, Joe Smith and his wife Janice; sisters, Sue Mellinger and Betty Schafer and her husband Tom; 23 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; his mother-in-law; Blanche Channel; and his two fur kids, Sis and Jake. He also is survived by several nieces and nephews; and special friends, Phil and Doris, Ruby and Bill.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Hughie, Jack and Dick; sisters, Irma, Becky and Rosemary; and a grandson, C.J.
