Mike Mullins, 68, of Boerne passed away on Wednesday, June 5, 2019.
Michael Eugene Mullins was born on May 10, 1951 in Portsmouth, Ohio to Carl Mullins and Dorothy Coburn Mullins and grew up in the greater Hammond, Indiana area. He graduated from Gavit High School and then began his railroad career of 43 years, working with his father, brother, and several uncles on the Monon Railroad in Indiana as a “car-knocker”.
Mike was drafted into the US Army in 1971 at Fort Knox. After his active duty, he returned to Indiana and joined the Indiana National Guard, where he served for six years. Following his time in the service, he returned to railroading. His long journey included working for the railroads Louisville & Nashville, CSTX, Union Pacific, South Shore, Burlington Northern, Iowa Interstate, and Rail America Shortlines, moving up the ladder from foreman to superintendent to manager of freight cars. His jobs took him as far north as the Great Slave Lake in the Northwest Territories of Canada to the jungles of the Yucatan in southern Mexico. Mike retired from full-time work in 2011 but continued as a consultant for over three more years.
Mike loved cars. His biggest hobby was watching Nascar races and car auctions, and these were a major pastime for him in the last years of his life. Those that knew him were astounded many times by the wealth of knowledge he had on any vehicle the Ford Motor Company ever built. Of course, his favorite Ford was the Mustang, and he was fortunate to have owned many in his lifetime.
Poppa Mike was loved and adored by his children, grandchildren, and his wife of 19 years, Linda Loomis Mullins. He will be missed by all.
Mike is survived by his wife, Linda; his children & stepchildren, Chanda Dilks (Kevin) of Bristol, Indiana, Michael Travis Mullins (Linda) of Marana, Arizona, Leslie Webster (Devin) of Tucson, Arizona, Ashley Toukabri of Milton, West Virginia, Jeremy Colvin (Christine) of Pasadena, Texas, Lora Moreno (James) of Gladewater, Texas, and Jay Colvin (Gay Nell) of Roseland, Louisiana; his siblings, Pamela Wilson (Jim) of Kentland, Indiana and Richard (Dick) Mullins (Paula) of Rensselaer, Indiana; his grandsons, Dustin Dilks, Bryson Mullins, Casey Patton, Mason Colvin, Levi Colvin, and Orin Colvin; and his great-granddaughter, Karma Grace Hendricks.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Carl Mullins and Dorothy Coburn Mullins, and his nephew, Richard Mullins.
