Michael Emmett Porter, surrounded by his wife and daughters, left this world on Thursday, December 31, 2020 to rest in comfort and peace with his Heavenly Father.
Michael was the beloved son of the late John “Jack” L. Porter, M.D., and the late Loretta A. Porter (nee Baker) of Cleveland, Ohio. He was predeceased in 2003 by his sister Elizabeth Porter of Oakland, CA.
Michael leaves his beloved wife and best friend of over 33 years, Colleen Jones and their treasured daughters Jane (20), Mary (18) and Brigid (14) of Upper Arlington, OH, his siblings: Mary of South Euclid, OH, John “Jack” Porter (wife Lisa) of Lake Orion, MI, Catherine Porter (husband Paul Wack, deceased) of Chicago, IL, Anne Porter-Quinn (husband James) of Alsip, IL, Christopher Porter (wife Rosalyn) of Alexandria, VA, Leonie Braun (husband Donald) of Garfield Heights, OH and brother-in-law John Gragnani of Oakland, CA, and numerous loving Jones family in-laws, many close friends, nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles.
Born and raised in Cleveland, Michael attended Saint Ignatius High School and Cleveland State University where he met Colleen and graduated with a degree in Mathematics. Michael worked in the actuarial department at Nationwide Insurance in Columbus, OH for 20 years.
Michael was a meticulous worker and enjoyed repairing just about anything, and often shared his expertise helping others. He was an astute and talented handyman and would tackle any project with either four walls or an engine; he restored 100-year-old homes and replaced automatic with manual transmissions just “to save on gas” and enjoy the process. An avid reader, Michael also delighted in discussions with others of books he had read. Michael enjoyed working on home projects, watching sports, playing guitar, listening to music (especially Neil Young), and any deep-sea fishing adventure. However, Michael mostly held dear time with his three daughters, watching them experience life and seeing everyday life through their eyes.
Michael was a faithful Catholic and a patriotic American. He was involved with the parish and school community, working on the Home School Advisory Board and the finance committee as well as coaching the kids’ soccer teams when they were younger. Michael will be remembered for his warm smile, his easygoing, friendly nature, and his pure love of his family.
