Merritt F. Loomis, 92, of Rock Springs, WY and formerly of Jacksonville, IL died Saturday, January 28, 2017, at Memorial Hospital in Rock Springs, WY.
He was born February 24, 1924 in Jacksonville, the son of John H. and Erma Griest Loomis. He married Edith M. Nunes on March 15, 1946 in Jacksonville and she preceded him in death on December 28, 2012.
He is survived by three daughters, Janet Ranieri of Rock Springs, WY, Diane Berglof (husband, William) of Silver City, NM, and Sandra Brower of Rock Springs, WY; five grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, John Howard Loomis Jr. and, in infancy, William Loomis, and a sister, Jean Blakeman.
Merritt was a member of the Jacksonville High School Class of 1942 and attended the University of Illinois. He served with the US Navy from March of 1941 to September of 1945 and later served with the US Air Force from January of 1947 to June of 1962, retiring as a senior master sergeant. He later owned and operated A & R Heating and Air Conditioning Repair Service for 10 years and worked with the USDA Soil and Water Conservation District for 10 years.
