Merlyn Altman, age 88 of Algona, passed away Monday, November 11, 2019 at the Algona Manor Care Center in Algona. Merlyn Constantine Altman, son of John and Eulalia (Gales) Altman, was born on July 5, 1931 in Livermore, Iowa. He graduated from St. Joseph High School in 1949. Merlyn served his country during the Korean War. On January 17, 1956, Merlyn was united in marriage to Susanna Berte at St. Joseph Catholic Church in St. Joe. He farmed until his retirement in 1993. Merlyn loved to play golf. His red 1948 F150 Ford truck and vintage John Deer tractor were some of his prized possessions. Merlyn enjoyed learning about historical events and listing to country music; especially Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings. In his early years he was the lead singer and guitarist for his band, the Grand Prixs. Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 63 years, Susanna of Algona; children, Dorothy (Bob) Bassell of Des Moines, Della (Randy) Guzman of Des Moines, Donny (Trudy) Altman of Rockford, IL, Dean Altman of Phoenix, AZ, Diana Arthur of Phoenix, AZ, Danny (Gretchen) Altman of Des Moines, Dawn Kotch of Phoenix, AZ and Dana (Ramon) Altamirano of Phoenix, AZ; nine grandchildren; siblings, John Altman of Phoenix, AZ, Tom Altman of Irvington , Bob Altman of Algona and Diana Roeder of Algona and numerous other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Eldon Altman and grandson, Cole Bassell.
