Merl L. Fields, Sr., 87, of Ingalls passed away on August 8, 2009. He was born on August 12, 1921 to the late Forrest and Daisy (Wheaton) Fields. He was a truck driver for several companies, retiring from Ervin Zink in 1983. Mr. Fields served in the U.S. Army as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne and was a POW for 28 months after being captured in North Africa.
He was a member of the Fortville American Legion Post 391 and the Fortville VFW Post 6904. Merl is survived by Clenis (Wright) (Jones) Fields, his wife of 31 years; children: Merl L. Fields, Jr. of Fortville; Randy (Brenda) Fields of Crothersville; Kathy (Donnie) Haskett of Anderson; Jeff Fields of Columbus, GA; Karen (Steve) Mattox of Yorkville, IL; Tina (Charlie) Fish of Hendersonville, TN; Nancy (Tony) Ladd of Portland, TN; John Fields of Evansville; Ronald L. Jones of Indianapolis; Nancy Phillips of Indianapolis; Jack E. Jones of Ingalls; Rebecca Ann (Jones) Fields of Columbus, GA; and Russell A. (Soni) Jones of Straughn; 34 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by wife Catherine L. (Pierce) Fields in 1966; and by his daughter, Jill L. Cloud.
