Mercedes Webb was born in Santo Domingo on October 14, 1929, to the late Lillian Webb, who died soon after giving birth to Mercedes. She was taken to St. Vincent by her aunt, where she lived in a small village called Camden Park with her aunts.
Camden Park had no schools or churches in those days, but Mercedes attended a ‘home meeting’ every Sunday. Mercedes was the only child in attendance. She recalled some rough days in Camden Park “but loved the Sunday meetings.
By God’s grace, Mercedes was heartened when the Salvation Army’s red truck came to Camden Park. For about one year, Mercedes would attend each Sunday morning and begin learning all about the saving Grace of Jesus Christ with a nourishing meal. She learned many Bible verses and spiritual songs from their love and teachings. Soon, Mercedes accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior.
It was discovered that Mercedes had an Uncle in Aruba. So she joined her Uncle when she was 18 years old. Mercedes learned how to sew and worked part-time in a tailor shop. A year later, she moved in with a family friend in Brooklyn, NY, where she earned her H.S. diploma and worked in the garment industry.
Soon, Mercedes met and married the love of her life Henry Greene and moved to Plainfield, NJ. She and Henry had a great life together. Years later, they decided to move to Scottsdale, Arizona, mainly due to Mercedes health.
By then, they had three sons – Henry, Ian, and Vincent – 7, 5, and 3 years old. She so loved her boys. They attended the Our Heritage Methodist Church, where she began understanding what it means to have Jesus as her personal Savior – PTL!”
After 30 years of marriage, Henry passed away from cancer, leaving her a widow. She was so grateful that her children, church, and friends – and most importantly, her GOD, led her through.
Mercedes married Albert Linley four years later and relocated to Sunrise, Florida. Unfortunately, tragedy would happen again, and Albert had a stroke less than two years into their marriage. But, once again, Mercedes had her family, friends, and God to lean on. Mercedes had peace despite all that had happened because she knew God was in control.
Mercedes leaves behind to mourn three devoted sons: Henry, Ian, and Vincent; two daughters-in-law: Brenda and Rhonda; six grandchildren: Michael, Rebecca, Joshua, Caleb, Madison, and Andrew; and two great-grandchildren: Emma and Lucy.
Mercedes was loved by many and will be missed by all. We loved her so much. We take comfort in knowing that she is in the hands of our precious Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
