Melvin R. Shelton, 69, of Vandalia, died Tuesday, January 10, 2012 in Borgess-Lee Memorial Hospital, Dowagiac.
He was born July 12, 1942 in Chicago, Illinois to Joseph and Princie (Baker) Shelton, the 9th child of 11 children. He married Jewell Evans on May 31, 2002 in Cassopolis. Melvin attended Chicago public schools. He served in the US Army and was honorably discharged in 1965. Melvin was a devoted husband and a loving father to all his children.
He is survived by his wife, Jewell (Evans) Shelton of Vandalia; children, Danny (Andrea) Evans of Dowagiac, Ricardo (Linda) Evans and Mario Evans, both of Vandalia; grandchildren, Danny Evans, Jr., Jaonna Evans and Adrianna Evans; children, Minister Derryl (Valerie) Shelton, John (Renita Torry) Shelton, Melvin (Dorothy) Moffett, all of Chicago, Illinois and Vivian (Eion) Dollerson of Norcross, Georgia; grandchildren, Melvin Jr. and Katrina Moffett, Rontell Shelton, Nekeya and Chantell Luckey, Daydrian, Larnetta and Tianna Dollerson, Brittany, Derryl Jr., Racheal, and Raquel Shelton; four great grandchildren; two sisters, Harriett McNeal of Glenwood, Illinois and Gladys Thomatis of Portage; one brother Ronald Shelton of Chicago, Illinois; and a host of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his first wife; seven brothers and sisters, Charles, Augustus, Raphael, Robert, William and Leon Shelton, and Pearl Shelton-Walton.
