Melvin L. Groce, 63, of Jacksonville, IL and formerly of Mendon, IL died Sunday, December 27, 2009 at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield, IL.

He was born February 13, 1946 in Quincy, IL; the son of Elden and Lucille Myers Groce. He is survived by a brother, David C. Groce of rural Alexander and a long time companion, Sarah Million of Jacksonville. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mr. Groce was a graduate of Unity High School in Mendon and attended Illinois College. He served with the US Army during the Vietnam War as an intelligence officer stationed in Okinawa and Japan. He returned to Jacksonville where he was employed at Eagle Foods and for the last 20 years at the Morgan County Housing Authority. A talented musician with a keen interest in music, he taught guitar lessons at Boyd Music in his spare time. He was a member of the Congregational Church in Mendon and had been an active volunteer with Boy Scouting. An avid reader, he enjoyed books and maintained a special interest in history and politics. His favorites times were those spent surrounded by family and friends..
