Melvin C. Vehmeier, born June 9, 1925, passed away Wednesday, November 23, 2016 at Manor Court in Freeport, IL.

He was the son of Charles & Erna (Schmidt) Vehmeier. He graduated from Lena High School in 1943. He married Dolores Dixon, August 18, 1956, at Main Street United Brethren Church; she passed on November 4, 2010.Mel farmed the family farm until 1958, when health problems forced him to leave it. He then went to work at Micro Switch for 28 years and then worked part-time at the Freeport Advertiser for 16 years. What he enjoyed doing the most was roto-tilling the many gardens that people needed done. He did this for 21 years while working at Micro and after.

Melvin was a charter member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, where he served on the church council and was a member of the choir from its beginning. He was a member of the Freeport Choral Society for many years, as well as Freeport Barbershopper’s and Green County Harmony Chorus. While there, he was in a quartet named “The Stateline Connection.” Many times Mel and Dolores sang in area churches during the summer.

He is survived by his daughter, Melody (Dean) Scott of Georgetown, KY; one son, Paul (Kathleen) Vehmeier of Freeport; five grandchildren, Elizabeth (Dale) Sharp, Jonathan and Christina (Kyle) Newsome of KY as well as Jacquelyn and Nathan Vehmeier of Freeport; two great granddaughters, Abigail and Hayden Sharp of KY; sister, Charlotte Buss of Freeport; sister-in-law, Eleanor Vehmeier of FL; four nieces and two nephews.

Melvin was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Dolores; two brothers, Paul and Robert; sister, Adelheid (Lester) Maier; and brother-in-law, Glen Buss.
