Melville P. “Mel” Sipes, 76, passed away and went home to rest, Saturday Sept. 20, 2014 at his residence in Greenwood.
Mel was born Nov. 27, 1937 in Bloomington to Ralph and Amanda (Hensley) Sipes. He attended Southport High School.
At the age of 13, Mel started painting. He was employed with Indiana Decorating Company until the 1990’s then became a self-employed painter, retiring in 2009 after 60 plus years in the business. He married Audrey Tomey on Feb.10,1990 in Whiteland; they were married for 24 years. Mel enjoyed fixing old cars and trucks, raccoon hunting, growing tomatoes,
and listening to country and gospel music. He loved spending time with his family and grandchildren. Mel was very out going and loved to talk to people.
Survivors include his wife, Audrey Sipes of Greenwood, eleven children, Tommy “TJ” Sipes of Acton, Vicki L. (Mike) Best of North Carolina, Paul E. (Tammy) Sipes of Bloomington, Tammy (Mark ) Wilson, Faith N. (Bob) Cowan, Angela (Nate) Cruea and Andy (Ali) Dollinger all of Indianapolis, Stephanie (David) Jones of Tennessee, Mark (Tammy) Sipes of Martinsville, Shannon Arthur of Greenwood and Monica Tomey of Ohio, four sisters, Betty Speas and Marcella Thacker both of Greenwood, Sandra Durham of Shelbyville and Diana Wetzel of Trafalgar, 20 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, sister-in-law, Charlene Gonterman of Whiteland and brother-in-law Duane Arthur of Kentucky.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, David “Bud” Sipes and Milton “Zuke” Sipes and brother-in-law, Bill Gonterman.
