Melissa L. Riggs, passed away of liver cancer on Tuesday, February 21, 2017 in Harlingen, Texas at Valley Baptist Medical Center. Melissa was born on February 4, 1978 in Harlingen, Texas. She is the third and only girl of children to William Stanley Riggs and Rufina Riggs.
She is survived by her husband, Raymond Mendez; 14 year old daughter, Kaitlyn Danielle Garza, fathered by Dennis Garza; and her 10 year old son, Derek Anthony DeLeon, fathered by Danny DeLeon; her three siblings, Samuel Riggs, Billy S. Riggs (Lisa), & Andrew S. Riggs (Daisy), and cousin Yvette Salinas.Melissa was a Class of 1996 San Benito High School graduate. She was a stay at home mother who loved and cherished her children deeply. She was always there for every football, soccer, baseball, & academic achievement not only for her kids, but for all of her nieces & nephews. Melissa was inspired by family and was always there for everyone who needed a helping hand.
When Melissa was diagnosed in July 2016 she approached her illness with bravery and grace. She always stayed positive and made sure to keep her beautiful smile. She inspired everyone in her life to never give up and live each day to the fullest. Even when her health was declining she always made sure the kids were taken care of and that mom & dad and the rest of the family had everything they needed.
If Melissa was here to speak to us, she would remind us to be kind to one another, laugh everyday, and always hold on to family. She will forever be in our hearts.
