Melba Jean Hammon

 

The daughter of the late H.B. Chastain and Jeanette (Gordon) Chastain, Melba was born on March 20, 1935 in Healdton, Oklahoma and passed away on October 8, 2021 in a local nursing facility.

A long time Healdton resident, Melba’s early years consisted of living in Healdton and Alaska.  Melba then moved to Lone Grove about the age of 14  and graduated from Lone Grove High School.  She and her husband Jimmie Melven Hammon were married in December of 1953.  While living in Healdton, Melba had worked at David’s Grocery, and was a talented seamstress and loved to crochet, and had delivered newspapers for the Daily Oklahoman.  Melba was a member of the St. Cecilia Catholic Church of Healdton and the St. Mary Catholic Church of Ardmore.  Melba was known for her contagious smile.

She is survived by her daughters, Debra Hathorn and husband Cecil, Jennie Basquez and husband Charles, Charolet Lornes and husband Mark; sons, Jimmie Hammon and wife Paula and Johnny Hammon and wife Mary; sister, Geraldine Lewellen; 1/2 brother, Robert Venne; many grandchildren and  great grandchildren.  Preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jimmie; brothers, Clyde Chastain and Dewey Chastain and 1/2 brother, George Venne; granddaughter, Lisa Hammon.
