Mayor George E. Tompkins, 86, of Seaside Heights, NJ, passed away Sunday, October 26, 2014 at home. Born and raised in New Brunswick, NJ, George has lived in Seaside Heights for 50 years. He was a graduate of Seton Hall University and served in the US Navy during WWII. George served as Mayor of Seaside Heights for 16 years, from 1975 to 1991. Following his term as Mayor, he served as councilman for several years. He worked in Sales for Colgate Palmolive in Jersey City for 30 years.
George and his late brother, Ralph, owned and operated Tompkins Spa Bar, the Seafarer Motel and Pleasure Island Arcade, all of Seaside Heights. He was a parishioner of Our Lady of Perpetual Help RC Church, Seaside Heights and was a member of the Knights of Columbus Seaside Council 8415, the American Legion Post 351, Seaside Heights, The 40 & 8 Club, the Seaside Heights Republican Club, the Seaside Heights Property Owners Association and served as President of the Ocean County Mayor’s Association. He was predeceased by his brother, Ralph Tompkins, in 2012.
George is survived by his wife of 60 years Mildred (nee Kuhn), a son and daughter in law Richard & Carmela Tompkins of Seaside Heights, NJ, a daughter and son in law Lynn & Kyle England of Toms River, and 3 grandchildren Kacey, Kalli and Cara.
