Velma Maxine Nall, 90, Des Moines, Iowa, died April 27, 2021 at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines because a judge would not sign a court order allowing her to be moved to Hospice care like the family wanted. She was born April 14, 1931 on the family farm in Huntsville, Missouri, to William Robert & Claudia Corene (Gorham) Stringer. Maxine helped with all the farm animals, chickens, hogs, and milk cows, while growing up and attending rural school. The grandchildren loved to hear her childhood stories.
Survivors include daughters, Linda (John) Elgin, Diana Duke, sons, Gerald (Betty) Holt, Stan Holt, brother, Wendall Stringer, grandchildren Charles, Jeremiah, Angela, Benjamin, Victoria, Timothy, Anthony, Jonah, Jenna, Jenessa, Matteson, Taylor, Maria, Karyn, John, Jessie and Josh plus numerous great & great great grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her parents, step father, Fred Biere, husbands, David Clifford Holt, and Howard E. Nall, brother, Delbert Stringer, sister, Carolyn Mohr, and grandchildren Joshua, Jacob, Isabella, Ross, Chad and Jessie.
Maxine had many jobs along her journey. She was a fantastic waitress at many eastside restaurants but once she taught herself to type she was able to spend the remainder of her working years at the State of Iowa Department of Revenue and Finance. She enjoyed her job and never really wanted to retire but finally did after 30 years.
Beside regaling the grandchildren with her growing up tales from the Missouri farm, she enjoyed bingo, crocheting, raising flowers, and plumping up the neighborhood birds, squirrels, and raccoons.
